I spoke to the Sigma rep about the focus issues with the art lenses and he, quite categorically, informed me, the lenses were okay but the camera needed to be returned to Canon to be adjusted to spec. If you check my posting history, you'll find that I've been advising people to do this as the best means to obtain the best performance from a camera/lens combo for quite a long time.

This is really the biggest deal about the FF mirrorless trend if you ask me: that it focuses based on the image seen, meaning that even as it ages, and misaligns, the camera will automatically adjust for it.īecause I was in the middle of a malfunctioning AF saga with Canon Portugal that involved 3 interventions and ended with a full unit replacement and the last thing that I wanted was for a non-Canon outfit to even touch the camera.Īs for in-tandem calibration of bodies and lenses for the reason you mentioned, you're preaching to the choir. In fact, the pro services by Canon and Nikon involve precisely that: sending your lenses AND cameras to have them adjusted to perfection. You can take a lens with a specific AMFA tuning for your camera, stick it on another body of the same make, and need to adjust those settings. Why? Camera bodies also are subject to variation, such as the positioning of the AF module. How good is an AF lens that might be optically superb just to let one down at the most critical of moments, on account of erratic AF behavior? Reviewers never talk about this when they are reviewing an EF-mount Sigma offer. Unfortunately, I had to drive back to the store because of how unreliable the AF on my copy was, only to find out that the 2nd copy they kindly made available was even worse. I was enamored with the recent Art 24 f/1.4, as soon as I saw samples from it, so decided to have a go at it.

but, along came these new Art series and they are so good, with such powerful price-to-performance ratios, that I decided to reconsider their offers. It still requires +11 AMFA on the 1DMKIV. They wanted the camera to make a tandem-adjustment. The only Sigma I have is a 12-24, which needed such a high AMFA adjustment with my old 1DMKIII that I took it to Sigma Portugal for them to do something about it. The thing about the Sigmas is that they might start acting up with no apparent reason and acting up in way that is not consistent and, as such, not adjustable through AMFA. If you consistently have portraits like those two, you certainly are well served. If you care about it (.and it seems you might do, because you're writing about it.) I strongly advise you to get FoCal and discover what you're not discovering with your current approaches. Think about it: If it was so, there would be no need for AMFA.
It is impossible that none of those interactions needs some amount of AMFA. I'll let you discover if it (.if it shows it's ugly head.) all by yourself.ġ8 lenses x 2 bodies, that's 36 interactions. The Sigma is really sharp and the Canon gives more of a glow due to spherican aberration, wide open. The Canon 50 f1.4 is USELESS in that regard. How good is this Sigma? Well, I've used it wide open in very poor light at a running track and it's good for that. Not a single one has an MA correction in-camera on it. Don't assume that every Sigma lens needs correction!ģ. Don't use that interference pattern thing. Without testing I tried it at different distances on the other two bodies and it appeared spot on in use.ġ. I discovered that in my 1Dx the four corrections were +1, 0, 0, 0. I decided to get the dock and used a sloping focus target in the process. This yielded +3 on 1Dx, +5 on 1Div and +15 on 1Dsiii.

A small number appeared to be off in focus so using the interference pattern GIF thingy you can download on-line I calibrated the lens at the appropriate distance. Got rid of it.Ī few days ago I bought the Sigma 50mm f1.4. I had a 120-300 OS which was very sharp but had a low hit-rate, half that of the 300. My Canon 300 f2.8 IS is better but not by a lot. The 300mm f2.8 was pretty good and I loved it.
